The Joy of Steamed Crabs
It’s a Baltimore summer tradition like no other: a dinner of steamed crabs spent with loved ones. Best enjoyed outside while the sun sets, steamed crabs with old bay seasoning are a staple of the mid-Atlantic region.
For Marylanders, steamed crabs are more than just a favorite food: they’re a seasonal activity. Families put down layers of old newspaper as mess-free tablecloths, arm their guests with crab hammers, and pour out dozens of steamed Chesapeake blue crabs to pick. The process of actually opening up the crabs and finding the savory meat to eat is a bit of a learned technique, so we recommend hearing from a local if you’ve never had steamed crabs before.
The crabs are typically steamed in water with vinegar or beer, then topped with signature old bay seasoning. It’s common to serve bushels of crabs with tasty sides to complement the seafood, including chips, fries, crab soup, and corn on the cob. There are tons of great seafood spots to order steamed crabs around Charm City, so if you’re visiting over the summer, be sure to give them a try while they’re still in season!

The origins of margaritas are hotly debated, but almost every historian agrees that the delicious cocktail made of tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice, and salt on the rim of the glass was first concocted sometime in the 1930s. Most people also agree that the name was inspired by a woman, but who exactly that woman was is almost as debated as who created the first confirmed margarita. On August 17, you have the opportunity to celebrate the popular drink at the Margarita Bar Crawl/Festival presented by Power Plant Live! After helping to establish the foundation of our country, Hamilton served as the first Secretary of the Treasury. His remarkable life and career were cut short after a duel with Aaron Burr, but Hamilton uses a variety of musical styles (including hip-hop, rap, blues, jazz, and R&B) to celebrate this great man’s life.
