Fort McHenry National Monument And Historic Shrine

Star Spangled Adventure

Have you ever wonder what inspired Francis Scott Key to write the United States national anthem, The Star Spangled Banner? Well, it was the unwavering defense of Fort McHenry on September 13-14 1814, during the War of 1812, that caused Key to pen the immortal words of the national anthem. Located just fifteen minutes from Hotel Indigo by car, Fort McHenry provides visitors with the unique chance to live some our nation’s most interesting history.

We have all sung the words many times in our lives, but when you step foot into the historic Fort McHenry, they seem to truly come alive. You can imagine seeing the sky light up from the “rockets red glare.” You will feel like you almost hear the “bombs bursting in air” even though it happened over 200 years ago. The fort is open daily from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM. Adult tickets are just $10, and children under the age of 15 are free. These passes get you full access to the fort which include ranger talks during the summer months. You will definitely not want to miss the Fort McHenry Guard perform drill, musket, and artillery demonstrations. There is also a fascinating 10 minute video played twice an hour which provides guests with some background information on the fort and its history. By the time you have seen all of the exhibits and presentations, you will want to stop by the Fort McHenry gift shop for that perfect souvenir to remember your visit.

The Star Spangled Banner by Francis Scott Key is truly a testament to American grit and determination. Fort McHenry allows you to be transported back to the time when the nation’s anthem was written. You are sure to gain a new appreciation for the song. After a day exploring some of America’s past, make your way back to Hotel Indigo for a delicious dinner at Poet’s Modern Cocktails and Eats.
