Visit America's First Cathedral | The Baltimore Basilica

Architecture and history buffs will not want to miss the opportunity to explore one of the oldest houses of worship. The Baltimore Basilica, also known as the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, was built from 1806-1821 and is the first Cathedral built in the United States. Located a short walk, less than five minutes, from the Hotel Indigo, the Baltimore Basilica is one of the city’s most beloved and most visited attractions. Visitors can take a guided tour, enjoy the peace of the Pope John Paul II Prayer Garden, or even worship during one of the daily Masses.

The Baltimore Basilica guided tour lasts about 45 minutes and includes stops in the upper church, undercroft, Basilica Museum, Our Lady Seat of Wisdom chapel, and the Crypt. History enthusiasts will particularly enjoy the Basilica Museum due to the many interesting artifacts that date back to the 17th Century, including the chasuble worn by St. John Paul II during his historic visit to the city of Baltimore. Of course, you do not have to partake in the guided tour. Visitors are welcome to take in the ambience and architecture of the Basilica on their own. Whether you take the tour or not, you will definitely want to make time to stop by the Pope John Paul II Prayer Garden. Located adjacent to the Basilica, the prayer garden is one of the few green spaces in downtown Baltimore and allows visitors to take some time for outdoor contemplation. Before leaving, head down to the Basilica Gift Shop for a souvenir to commemorate your visit or a special gift from America’s first Cathedral.

After a day spent exploring all the history that the Baltimore Basilica has to offer, take the short walk back to the Hotel Indigo where you can enjoy a nice dinner at Poet’s Restaurant.

Address: 409 Cathedral St, Baltimore
